Prefilter building, Katwijk
The Prefilter building (Voorfiltergebouw) was built in 1912, presumably after a design by C.J. van Spall (then director of the Leidsche Duinwater Maatschappij). Various renovations took place between 1912 and 1956. The Prefilter building is a listed monument.
Solid Services carried out an inspection and investigation of the concrete façade sections that feature in the Prefilter building. By conducting a thorough investigation and various analyses, on site and in our laboratory, we were able to get a sound idea of the quality, properties and damage mechanisms in the historic building materials.
After the investigation, Solid Services drew up a restoration plan, including a detailed examination of which materials and restoration techniques should be used, stipulating that the character and image of the national monument must not be lost. We sought to ensure that the repair materials to be used would match the existing ones as closely as possible.
Investigation and repair of monumental concrete
It all started with a thorough investigation of the properties, prevailing damage mechanisms and scale of damage of and to the historical building material. If repairs are going to be made, the aim is to handle these materials responsibly, to guarantee safety and to preserve the character and look or the building as much as possible.
