The industrial site of the old Ringers factory in Alkmaar is being transformed into a special residential area. Apartments are to be built in the factory where Ringers’ famous cherry bonbons and other chocolate products were produced until 1973.

Ringers factory, Alkmaar

In late 2018, Solid Services was commissioned by Ten Brinke Bouw to carry out non-destructive and destructive testing on the concrete columns, beams and floors in this former chocolate factory.

The chocolate factory played an important part in the development of the city of Alkmaar. Ringers was a large employer and put bread on the tables and chocolate in the sweets’ jars of hundreds of families. In some cases, every member of the family worked in the factory, as packers, or distribution workers, or head of the bonbon department. Ringers was known for fine chocolate, delicious cherry bonbons and sugar work.

New apartments are to be built in this unique cultural-historical building.

The factory premises were built in stages between 1920 and 1940.

In close consultation with Wiggers Ingenieurs in Bouwconstructies, the structural engineer for the project, further investigation was carried out on the existing concrete shells of each building section, to serve as the basis for the necessary calculations.

The reinforcement configuration in the concrete structure was determined using our radar scan technology in combination with destructive testing. In addition, we drilled for samples and tested their compressive strength in our laboratory. Finally, we assessed the make-up and finish of the floor in various places.
